The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all places that are open to the general public (1).
Accessibility for individuals with disabilities is not only a legal requirement, but it also makes good business sense. Companies that are accessible to people with disabilities are able to tap into a larger customer base and can attract a more diverse workforce (2).
With that knowledge, one wonders why in a grand city like New York…are there still mediocre levels of accessibility? I was in Chealse this past summer at a medical office. The elevator couldn’t fit my wheelchair with me in it, so I was forced to lean on the wall, close my chair, and laid my body across the chair just to get upstairs to the main office. Needless to say, that was my last visit there. The issue is, this is sadly normal from business buildings to residential buildings.
